A Credit Repair Kit - Worth the Ten Dollars?

There are numerous credit repair kits, manuals, guides, bibles, and sometimes just plain old books that claim to give you all that you'll need to repair your credit. Analyzing one of these "credit repair kits" on the shelves at an office supply store, I decided to indulge myself and spend the $10 to see just how useful it really was.

The Kit's Content

This particular credit repair kit basically outlines your rights as a consumer and gives you a wealth of information about the credit bureaus. That's the extent of it when it comes to actual "credit repair." The bulk of what's provided is instructional information about establishing and keeping good credit.

Admittedly you shouldn't always judge a book by its cover, but there should have been substantially more about repairing your credit in this "credit repair kit." The information they provide on developing good credit is really pretty good, but you have to believe that buyers of the kit are those with bad credit looking to fix it.

There is also a substantial amount of information regarding the three major credit bureaus - Equifax, Experian and Transunion. Discussions about how they're scoring systems truly affect your life. Realistically you could simply go to their websites if you want to read up on that.

The Kit's Practical Use

Though it does detail the relevant credit card and credit repair laws it does so in a very dry style. It would be better served to put it in plain English. It feels like you're reading the tedious wording of the laws themselves.

It does have a listing of letters that are useful when trying to repair your credit, but even this falls short of its mark. While it showcases some of the more important letters needed, such as a sample dispute letter and a debt validation letter, it doesn't provide you with everything that you may in fact need, like a pay for delete letter, a goodwill letter or a good faith letter.

The Verdict

If you're reading this article then you more than likely have regular access to the internet. Anything that's provided in this credit repair kit is available for free online. It may take you at most an hour or so to gather all of that information into one place.

The kit is a good introduction if you know absolutely nothing about how your credit and debt usage affects your credit scores and overall credit profile. Though again, this is information you can get for free, along with your free credit reports, by going through the Federal Trade Commission's website.

A kit like this is only worth the money if you don't have the time or desire to search the internet for the free information. However if that's the case, then it's doubtful that you'll be very successful in repairing your own credit anyway. You may want to consider employing ethical credit repair services to do the legwork for you.

A reputable company that repairs credit won't only save you time and effort; they'll actually educate you throughout the process about establishing and maintaining positive credit. Whether you do it yourself or hire an expert to do it for you it's important that you educate yourself so you don't make the same mistakes that got you into this mess in the first place.
